UTI Mutual Fund

Introduction to UTI Mutual Fund

UTI Mutual Fund is one of India's oldest and most iconic financial institutions, tracing its roots back to the Unit Trust of India (UTI), which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1963. UTI was a pioneer in the Indian mutual fund industry, introducing the concept of mutual funds to Indian investors.

In 2003, following a major restructuring, the erstwhile UTI was bifurcated into two entities:

  1. Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India (SUUTI), which holds residual assets and liabilities.
  2. UTI Mutual Fund (UTIMF), managed by UTI Asset Management Company Ltd. (UTI AMC), which was registered with SEBI on February 1, 2003, and continues the mutual fund operations.

UTI Mutual Fund is unique in its sponsorship structure. It is jointly sponsored by four of India's largest public sector financial institutions:

  • State Bank of India (SBI)
  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)
  • Punjab National Bank (PNB)
  • Bank of Baroda (BoB)

Each of these sponsors holds an 18.24% stake in UTI AMC. Additionally, a significant 26% stake is held by the US-based global asset manager T. Rowe Price Group Inc., through its subsidiary T. Rowe Price Global Investment Services Ltd. This unique blend of public sector backing and international expertise provides UTI Mutual Fund with a strong foundation and a global perspective.

UTI Mutual Fund is recognized for its:

  • Legacy of Trust: Decades of experience in managing public money have built a strong foundation of trust among investors.
  • Wide Reach: It boasts one of the largest distribution networks in India, reaching even rural and semi-urban areas, with a significant number of investor accounts.
  • Diverse Product Portfolio: Offering a comprehensive range of schemes across various asset classes to cater to different financial goals and risk appetites.
  • Investment Expertise: A large and seasoned team of fund managers and research analysts drives their investment strategies.
  • Pioneering Spirit: UTI has many firsts to its credit, including India's first Unit Linked Insurance Plan (ULIP) in 1971 and the iconic UTI Mastershare in 1986.

With a substantial Asset Under Management (AUM) and a vast investor base, UTI Mutual Fund remains a dominant and respected player in the Indian mutual fund landscape.
