ING Mutual Fund
ING Mutual Fund
Introduction
ING Mutual Fund was formerly the Indian asset management arm of ING Groep N.V., a global financial institution of Dutch origin. It operated in India as part of ING's broader financial services presence in the country.
However, ING Group decided to exit its asset management and insurance businesses in Asia as part of a strategic divestment. In India, this led to the acquisition of ING Investment Management (India) Private Limited's mutual fund schemes and portfolio management accounts by Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company Ltd. (now Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC Ltd.) in 2014. This transaction marked the end of ING Mutual Fund's independent operations in India.
Fund Managers
Before its acquisition, ING Mutual Fund would have had its own team of fund managers overseeing its various schemes. However, with the merger, these fund managers and their expertise were integrated into the acquiring entity, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC Ltd. Therefore, there are no fund managers currently working under the "ING Mutual Fund" brand in India today. The schemes are now managed by the fund management team of Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund.
Scope and Investment Philosophy
During its operational period, ING Mutual Fund offered a range of equity, debt, and hybrid schemes, similar to other diversified mutual fund houses. Their investment philosophy would have aligned with global best practices and local market insights. Some of their notable approaches included:
- Multi-Manager Funds (OptiMix Funds): ING was known for pioneering "Multi-Manager Fund of Funds" in India, where the fund would invest across schemes managed by different asset management companies, aiming to select "best-of-breed" funds based on various investment styles and risk profiles.
- Financial Planning Focus: They often positioned their products, especially their OptiMix series, as tools to simplify financial planning for investors by offering various risk profiles (e.g., Cautious, Conservative, Prudent, Aggressive) that diversified across asset classes (equity, debt, gold).
However, this scope and investment philosophy are now integrated into and overseen by Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund, which continues to offer a wide range of products with its own defined investment philosophy.
List of Funds (Historical Context - now part of Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund)
Since ING Mutual Fund was acquired by Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund (ABSL MF), all its schemes were either merged into existing ABSL MF schemes or renamed. Therefore, there are no active funds being offered under the "ING Mutual Fund" brand name today.
For historical reference, some of the schemes that were part of ING Mutual Fund and their post-merger status (as part of Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund) include:
- ING Liquid Fund merged into Birla Sun Life Cash Plus (now Aditya Birla Sun Life Liquid Fund).
- ING Treasury Advantage Fund merged into Birla Sun Life Savings Fund (now Aditya Birla Sun Life Savings Fund).
- ING Midcap Fund merged into Birla Sun Life Small & Midcap Fund (now Aditya Birla Sun Life Small Cap Fund or Mid Cap Fund depending on reclassification).
